Singing the World Into Being: a Mala and Mantra Workshop

mala mantra workshop pittsburgh

Join us for an exploration of the science and mysticism of mantras!

We will each make and take home a mala (Sanskrit for a string of prayer beads) and we will converse; learning about the science, magic, and liberating power of mantra (Sanskrit for a particular type of sacred vocalization).  We’ll explore the potential to heal, grow, attune, open, manifest change, and more as we explore the hidden powers of vibration and sound.

Materials will be provided, and participants will learn how to make a mala by doing it together. The workshop will be led by Michael Hartigan, who has plenty to share about the yoga of sound – working with mantra.

Topics will include:

  • A look at brainwaves,
  • The origins and history of mantra practice
  • The many researched benefits of mantra
  • Myth and legend about mantra practitioners
  • How to (and not to) practice with mantras on your own
  • And more!

Outcomes:

You will learn how to make a mala and actually make one to take home! You can select either wooden or stone beads for your mala and the materials and everything you need will be included.

You will also get a first hand experience of working with basic mantras, learn how to pronounce OM, and hopefully laugh and learn a lot!

About the Instructor, Michael Hartigan

michaelhartiganMichael’s approach to meditation and spiritual practice puts emphasis on relaxation and release of tension from the physical, energetic, and mental bodies.  Many of our discomforts and diseases are due to trapped energies that we may feel we lack the deep tools to heal. Meditation and genuine spiritual practice allow us to recognize and hold a space in which we can gently explore our innate healing abilities and real nature.

Michael has served as a lay teacher and meditation instructor at Three Rivers Tibetan Cultural Center, assistant coordinator of practice and education and a meditation guide at the Shambhala Meditation Center of Pittsburgh, a Buddhist chaplain at the Allegheny County Prison, a healer at The Three Rivers Free Clinic For The People, and a guest speaker at Duquesne University.

Curiosity lead to self-exploration of meditation in his teens; since then he has practiced under the tutelage of venerable lineage holders in the Dzogchen, Nath, Ch’an, Zen, and Tibetan Buddhist (Rime, Nyingma, Kagyu, & Bön) lineages, as well as less formal study and training with Shakta, Shaiva, Gnostic, Taoist, Buddhist, Shambhala, and Hermetic teachers.  He has also been blessed to build and learn with medicine people of the indigenous African and American nations. He has been the disciple of his heart teacher Lho Drikung Ontul Rinpoche for the last 15 years, and dedicated to the ancient tradition of dzogchen.

He loves tarot, mountain biking, camping, dancing, making pilgrimages (and other glorified road trips), creating art and jewelry, and watching the spiritual teachings of the Eastern world begin to take root in the modern West!

About Liquid Light Temple

A School and Center focusing on the arts and sciences of Tantra and Magic, on Connection and Freedom, started by Violet Magdalena Platt.

We don’t separate sexuality and spirituality, life force and sexual energy and healing energy. Sexual energy is interconnected and critical to whole, vibrant health and happiness.

Our goal is to progress humanity towards a more embodied, liberated, and magical experience. We do this through reawakening the Feminine and ancient wisdom teachings through private sessions and coaching and open classes, workshops, and gatherings. This is a dynamic and intuitive space.
